Description

Puff pastry, known in French as "pâte feuilletée," is a light, flaky pastry made from laminated dough composed of flour, water, salt, and butter. The technique of creating puff pastry involves repeatedly folding and rolling out layers of dough and butter to create hundreds of thin layers. When baked, the water in the butter evaporates, creating steam that separates the layers of dough and results in a light, airy texture with a crispy, golden exterior. Here's a basic recipe for making puff pastry: Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups (300g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (227g) unsalted butter, cold, cut into cubes
  • 3/4 cup (180ml) ice-cold water
Instructions:
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the cold cubed butter and toss to coat the butter with flour.
  2. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, work the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add the ice-cold water, mixing until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and shape it into a rectangle. Roll out the dough into a long rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  5. Fold the top third of the dough down and the bottom third up, as if folding a letter. Rotate the dough 90 degrees.
  6. Repeat the rolling and folding process two more times, for a total of three turns. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before using.
Nutrition Information: The nutritional content of puff pastry can vary depending on the specific recipe and serving size. However, as a general guideline, puff pastry is high in calories and fat due to its butter content. A typical serving (1 ounce or 28 grams) of puff pastry may contain approximately:
  • Calories: 160-180
  • Total Fat: 11-13 grams
  • Saturated Fat: 7-8 grams
  • Carbohydrates: 13-15 grams
  • Protein: 2-3 grams
It's important to note that these values are approximate and can vary based on the ingredients and proportions used in the recipe. Additionally, puff pastry is often used as a component in dishes rather than consumed on its own, so the overall nutritional impact will depend on how it's prepared and served.
